2 stars Horrible battery....why can't you recharge it WHILE it's playing? 2010-09-05

Reviewer: bryman10

Lightweight, decent picture and sound, but one MAJOR flaw...the battery life is horrible. Before we bought this cheap Phillips model (it was the cheapest model we found in several stores, and seemed decent), we had an older Polaroid model. Although the Polaroid had its share of issues (heavy, weird and delicate clip-style battery), the Polaroid had a GREAT battery with the best feature EVER.....rechargeable battery DURING play!. Why don't all portable DVD players have this feature?!?!? It should be standard for all of them IMHO. Anyway, the biggest annoyance with the Philips is that we can't even get through a whole 1.5-2 hour movie (in the house, tent, in the car, etc) without the battery dying. And of course, it has to be turned off to recharge, so we have to wait several hours for it to play again. Horrible, stupid, ridiculous design. I suppose if you are listening to CD's on it, or watching shorter DVD's it might be OK, just not for me. Anyone want to buy mine cheap?

4 stars Wanted to use it for travel but battery is poor. 2010-08-24

We use it primarily for our toddler and it has been thrown around and beaten and still works! Great device as long as you don't need it for traveling.

Very easy to use and fold out feature allowed me to easily attach with velcro strip to seat back for my granddaughter to see.

3 stars these don't last long 2010-08-09

The first time I bought a portable DVD player (not any name brand) for use in the vehicle, it lasted over two years. I went through two of the Phillips players then in a year each. The cord will not last long at all, so buy a good DC adapter from an electronics source at the same time you buy this. I liked how the thing operated--particularly that if you had to open the player to check the DVD for not playing right (and it ended up being something that you could wipe away that was glitching it) the player remembered where you were in the DVD, so you didn't have to go hunting for the right spot again. The battery gave me two hours, which was fine.

But one year and then dead? I'm an adult user, not a kid who slams the thing around or sticks peanut butter into its sides, and it seems ludicrous to me that it fails so quickly. I bought a second one, thinking the first quick death was a fluke, but it wasn't. The second one lasted perhaps 11 months.

Manufacturers, you have to make your products better than this. It isn't just the issue of value, but that our landfills are going to be piled up with this sort of badly-made junk. Please, Phillips, be more responsible.

This player is reasonably portable and works as it should. No glitches. Kept my kids occupied on two 4 hour drives and did not require my involvement to turn on and change disks. I found the sound volume from the speakers to be a little low and the batteries never last as long as you thing they should but it has a 12 volt DC car charger. However, if you are buying this for car travel you will not be dissapointed.
